How the Numbers Move

Thirty-One Years at Number One

The Labrador retriever held the top position in the AKC's annual breed registration ranking every year from 1991 to 2021 — a consecutive run with no parallel in the organisation's recorded history.

A Record Built on Volume, Not Uniformity

The American Kennel Club has published annual registration rankings since the mid-twentieth century, and the Labrador retriever's thirty-one-year streak, which ended when the French bulldog displaced it in 2022, stands as the longest unbroken run at number one in the AKC's modern data. At its peak, the AKC registered well over 100,000 Labradors in a single year. The figure had declined well before the French bulldog's ascent, reflecting broader shifts in urban living and apartment-scale dog ownership rather than any collapse in the Labrador's popularity.

The breed's dominance across three decades obscures a documented internal divergence. Working and field-trial lines selected for drive, biddability and athletic frame have diverged measurably in conformation from the heavier, broader show stock that competes under AKC and Kennel Club standards. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, which holds the largest open canine orthopaedic database in North America, records hip and elbow evaluation results by breed, and the Labrador retriever consistently appears among the highest-volume submissions — a function of both population size and the breed's known hip-dysplasia prevalence.

In the United Kingdom, the Kennel Club's registration data tells a comparable story. The Labrador retriever held first position in the KC's annual count for most of the same period, though French bulldogs overtook it in the KC figures in 2018, several years ahead of the AKC shift. The Labrador regained the top position in the KC figures the following year and still held it in 2023, by which time French bulldog registrations had fallen back. The Kennel Club publishes its breed registration statistics annually, disaggregated by breed and year, providing a continuous series against which the Labrador's trajectory can be read directly.

The thirty-one-year record is, at minimum, a statistical artefact worth examining: it reflects not a single homogeneous breed but a population that had, by the streak's end, split into recognisably distinct functional types sharing a registry entry and a name.
